According to Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) in York, officials were called for a child laying on the ground between two homes on the 50 block of 1st Ave.

Authorities pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

The child was identified as 12-year-old Kain Heiland, with police later identifying a 13-year-old boy as the shooter.

Officials say they interviewed a boy who was with the pair at the time of the shooting.

The suspect, Kain, and the witness were all friends, according to court documents.

The boy told police that the three had walked to the suspect's home, where he later exited with a firearm.

After this, court documents say the suspect made a joke about Kain's mother, prompting him to respond by saying "shut up."

The suspect then raised a black laser-sighted firearm and shot Kain at close range in his upper back.

The two boys checked Kain's body and realized that he was not moving.

Both children then went back to their homes.

The young witness told officers that he described the situation to his mother.

After police were called, officers located the suspect and interviewed his father, who said that he had a .380 Kel-Tec pistol in a hidden gun safe at the house.

The father told authorities that his son had contacted him after the incident and asked for him to come home.

When the child's dad arrived, he found the pistol secured in the safe.

It is unknown at this point if the boy was arrested for the shooting.
