This winter season expected to be more 'active' than in recent years

We’ve had our first taste of cold winds, and for some of us snow, already this year, but is it a sign of things to come?

Much of November has been pleasant so far, and there’s warmer weather on the way over the next few days, but looking down the road, there are indications that our weather will start to change again heading into Thanksgiving week.

Colder weather will move back into the region next week and some snow is possible right around the holiday. However, Winter is not here to stay just yet. The weather pattern in the Pacific will allow for another surge of mild air to move into the country the following week and our temperatures will warm up for the first half of December.

After that is when things start to change for a longer period of time. High pressure will tend to build over Alaska and the western portions of Canada and that will allow for more-frequent intrusions of cold air from Canada. At the same time, the storm track across the southern part of the country will start to become more active leading to increasing chances of wintry weather in our part of the world.

That pattern should stick around for much of January and February and potentially into part of March as well. We will of course have some warm weather at times during those months, but this year will likely be more active than the last several winters have been.

Snowfall should be about 10% above normal in the Laurel Highlands and Northern Alleghenies and near normal in the Eastern Alleghenies. Lake effect, which we haven’t had much of the last few years, should also be more prevalent this year.
