A softball team with a purpose

A group of young girls are making a difference through softball and teamwork.

In the fourth year of the Lady Dirtbags softball team, the girls find themselves not just winning but contributing.

During a car wash in Johnstown, the girls displayed team effort and care for the community.

"This looks just like any group of young girls, laughing and having fun," coach Matt Hoffman said.

In order to play for the Lady Dirtbags, it is required for each player to participate in service projects.

"We took the name, 'Lady Dirtbags' from the very first softball team that ever played women's softball. They were called the Lady Dirtbags. They used sandbags instead of bases," father of player Stanley Carr said.

The two teams, based on age, include 22 players, and the girls on the teams come from 10 different school districts in various counties.

"We're trying to teach them there are things after softball. They need to learn how to give back to their community. Give back to the people who need it," Hoffman said.

The team was taught that when others need help, on the field or in life, that they can help make a difference.
