STATE COLLEGE, Pa (WJAC) — According to court documents, a former Penn State employee has been charged with fraud, accused of purchasing computer and technology equipment, meant for the university servers, and selling it for his own personal profit.
Authorities say Daniel Sickels, formerly of Lewistown, Pa, worked for the university, from 2005 to 2017, as a network and systems manager.
Investigators say Sickels was responsible for purchasing equipment to maintain the university's computer servers.
Documents state that Sickels used his authority as the systems manager to purchase equipment, from the university's purchasing application, and then sold the equipment and merchandise for his own personal gain.
Investigators say the equipment was sold to out-of-state, third-party buyers, including to people and businesses in Wyoming and California.
Investigators also say that Sickels lied to authorities about the purchases when he was interviewed in March of 2018.
As a result of the indictment, Sickels is also forced to pay over $260,000 in restitution, which authorities say is the amount of money he made by selling the equipment.
Future court dates for Sickels have not yet been announced.
