SOMERSET, Pa. (WJAC) — As COVID-19 case numbers continue to rise, medical equipment is still in high demand.
DeVilbiss Healthcare located in Somerset is known for creating respiratory medical equipment. In the midst of this pandemic, they have become a key player in helping to supply hospitals with the necessary equipment to treat patients with COVID-19.
6 News first spoke with DeVilbiss Healthcare’s Vice President, Tim Walsh back in March at the beginning of the pandemic. Then, he told us his company is working to keep up with the demand of respiratory devices. Now, months later they are still working at an unprecedented rate.
“The demand for our products continues to be significantly higher than normal. Especially with oxygen concentrators,” said Walsh.
The company has seen support from other manufacturing businesses and Governor Tom Wolf’s office.
“We’ve been in regular contact with the governor’s office. They’ve been very supportive. Early in the crisis when businesses were ordered to close the governor’s office proved it essential in helping us ensure that any of our Pennsylvania based vendors were added to the essential business listing which prevented us from having any interruptions in the supply chain,” said Walsh.
One problem DeVilbiss Healthcare is still facing is finding enough people willing to work.
“We are producing more product than we have in the company’s 130 year history. We have the physical capacity to keep up with the demand. The single largest challenge we have is labor. We’ve been actively recruiting and hiring since December. At this point we have a need for 25 to 30 production associates to keep the output increase,” said Walsh.
