'It's almost unbelievable:' IUP students react to weekend mass shooting at Indiana County community

As we continue to follow Sunday morning’s mass shooting in Indiana County, we visited the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus, which is about a mile away from where the shooting happened, to speak with students about how they feel after the tragic event.

Students say that they’ve never experienced an event like this before so close to their campus.

Indiana County coroner Jerry Overman identified Jamar Monte Porterfield Herriot Jr as the victim from Sunday’s deadly mass shooting at the Chevy Chase Community Center in White Township

Officials say the 22-year-old, from Homestead, Pa, was reportedly attending a party at the community center when he and eight others were shot.

Overman has ruled Herriot’s death as a homicide and noted that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police say the shooting remains under investigation and no suspects are in custody.

“It’s almost unbelievable. It was just another day in Indiana and then I started getting alerts on my email from the police department and it went on for a couple of hours and I didn’t know what was happening. It’s unheard of here. I have never experienced something like that since I’ve been here. It’s crazy,” said Nick Murphy, a sophomore at IUP.

We also asked students about how they felt in terms of campus safety.

“It’s definitely concerning. At this point, I kind of just don’t walk anywhere alone unless I’m going to classes. I definitely don’t walk anywhere alone off campus. The increased police presence definitely helped but they still can’t guarantee your safety anywhere you go, so it’s definitely scary knowing that he’s still out there,” said sophomore Megan Huntington.

Students did say that the university has been in constant contact since the incident.

“They’ve been trying to keep us in the loop. They keep sending us update emails and stuff like that, just to keep us in the know about where he’s at or if they catch him, whatever. They’ve done a good job of stepping up and making sure that we’re all reassured of our safety,” sophomore Dakendrick Daniels told us.

The university confirms that the person killed is not a student, or alumni of the university.
